Disclaimer, my comments feel nitpicky even to me. I like the image more than I disagree with the message.

OK, so the first part reminds me of the Rebbe with the big stick (how's that for imagery) back in the cheder teaching us the Hagada and impressing on us that the only true ben chorin is someone who is not a slave to his Yetzer Hara.

For the 2nd part, I have no idea what happiness is, I only familiar with the artificially generated type, and I have occasionally enjoyed what I do.

It's interesting that you feel that way. I thought that for those on this site, the idea that we are a slave to our passions and not free at all is much stronger feeling then it is to others.

As far as the second part, based on those clean-streak numbers in your signature, it seems to me that you have been at least temporarily "freed" from the passions, During that time did you enjoy what you were doing? Were you happy? (btw, I'm not sure if one can over analyze himself if he is really really happy. Then he becomes un-happy just because he is agonizing over the state of his happiness.)

I wasn't going to comment and then everyone said what I was thinking. For me, freedom is the ability to say no. I'm free when I can say that I don't have to lust today. Freedom for me isn't running wild. Although I agree in part to the quote, because having the ability to do what you like is freeing.

I agree with the happiness statement. It's not completely true, there's a lot more to happiness then just liking what you do, but I am much happier these days, and I think it's partially because my life is centered around doing what I like and I'm successful at it.

This reminds me of my favorite quote from Rav Matisyahu Salamon " Bechira is not the ability to choose to do what we want, it is the ability to choose to do what we don't want".

And Freedom means having the ability to make your own choices.
