see zivachim daf 113b that it held onto the ark by it's horns and it's nostril into the ark and a nais happened that the water around the ark was cooler than the rest (og the gaint was also saved in this manner..

what's a free slip card?

The main point is that it needed to breathe wholesome air in order to be saved.
