An interesting thought based on R' Avraham ben HaRambam:

R' Avraham writes that a person can only experience a true encounter with the רבונו של עולם if he has been מתקן his מדות. This is because many of the מדות are in fact מדות of הקב"ה. Therefore, by working on being a רחום וחנון וארך אפים, a person acquires the מדות of הקב"ה and is able to be מכיר את בוראו.
למשל, if you gave a Holocaust survivor a logical argument why the Holocaust really wasn't as bad as people say, he would say, "THAT'S ABSURD! I KNOW WHAT IT WAS LIKE! I WAS THERE!" On the other hand, in a few generations from now, if you would ask somebody if the holocaust happened, they may say "yes". But if you would give them a logical proof that it couldn't have happened, you may be able to convince him it never happened.
It is the same thing with אמונה. You can give very convincing arguments to prove that there is no הקב"ה. But these arguments will never pass off as valid to somebody who is a רחום וחנון וארך אפים. Because he has the same traits as Hashem, he is able to recognize Him, and encounter Him. And once you have encountered Hashem, there is no denying his existence.
With 53 days behind me, I am noticing that the further away I am from lust, the more I am able to recognize Hashem
