My Rebi used to say that when the kids were making noise his father would would walk in and say Meshenichnas Av mahtin biSimcha. When the father walks in .....

When ever Av comes around and everyone is afraid to be happy, it never seems right to me. In Adar we said Meshinichnas Adar Marbin BiSimcha. Did we ever say to go back down? No, not until Av. They in Av we say mahtin bisimcha. So we are then back to a regular level of simcha.

Likewise, it's no mitzvah to be sad during the month of Av. We only need to decrease in our joy. For the only way to serve Hashem is by being b'simcha; it is impossible to serve Hashem properly when one is sad.

i heard a great explanation on the word כשם
כשם משנכנס אב ממעטין בשמחה, כך משנכנס אדר מרבין בשמחה
what is the meaning of כשם?
because just like when someone walks in tisha baav with a platter of meat and a bottle of wine with music, everybody would instantly jump on him
"THE SAME" if someone walks in, in adar with a long nose or a sad face, everybody should jump on him and shout "YOU DONT GO AROUND LIKE THAT IN ADAR!"

When our Rosh Yeshiva would chide us for slacking off in our learning during the summer months we would remind him of his Adar shmuess " אין שמחה אלא תורה ". So משנכנס אב ממעטין בשמחה also means less learning!


Seriously, Purim was always a big trigger for me, costumes, mingling, drinking etc. even thinking about the Vashti scene!

Since joining this site a couple months ago I think I can deal with Purim as I do any other day.... One hour at a time! I can step away from lustful thoughts and encounters instead of fighting them with righteous zeal. Maybe I can finally achieve a modicum of real Simcha this Purim.
