When reading posts, many times I'm inclined to "like" it, but the only thing available is the "Thank you" button which doesn't really seem to fit.

Why not have an up-vote or "like" button for posts. It would be a good motivator. And maybe a scoring system like reddit. The more likes/upvotes you get the more points you get.

(I don't know where else to post this. Shouldn't there be a meta-forum for questions relating to the forum itself?)

There are a couple of other current threads that discusses the merit of Thanks You's.  Take a look at those.  It's an interesting idea that you are proposing.  However, keep in mind that GYE is not social media.  We are all here to give and receive chizzuk from others.  This is not a competition for who has the best posts or most likes.  As have been noted on other threads, the Thank You button is just to let the poster know that you appreciated what he posted (in even cases where you may not necessarily agree with him)

I get what you're saying. So you don't have to get points or whatever. But naming the button "LIKE" instead of "THANK YOU", just sounds more correct to me. But maybe it's just me.

If someone doesn’t get 20 up-votes, do they automatically get impeached?

Im not sure gye is able to, they are using a 3rd party software to run the forums, they didnt write the code from scratch.
