Thanks to you and everyone else for your insights. They will, B'ezrat HaShem, help me stay clean.

My wife died a few months ago, but for years beforehand we had no physical intimacy anyway. I believe that not having a sex life had NOTHING to do with my problem.

For me, pornography and masturbation were a way to relieve anxiety, nothing more. When your emunah and your bitachon are weak or absent, anxiety is a problem. So, if anyone has any ideas on developing those, I'd be grateful for suggestions. Meanwhile I'm going to admit it to myself when I'm feeling anxious and DO something physical -- other than masturbation, obviously -- to relieve it. Singing, dancing, pushups, maybe a punching bag. Even better, do something about the thing I'm anxious about.
