I am a little occupied now so will get to the point.

Does anyone have any suggestions for filtering Linux? I am trying Open DNS, but it does not look too great right now, as it doesn't filter everything properly (too lenient) and is very easy to change the settings. Perhaps loosing the pw would help, but the there are probably easy ways around that. The Venishmartem or Nativ filters do not work on Linux if I am not mistaken, but have not really double checked. Does anyone have an idea, or better; experience??

If you are running Linux you are by nature going to be more exposed ... (Linux is open source harder to restrict) maybe get a router that you can filter.

Hi! i know a solution, you can download wine(www.winehq.org/), is a simulator that you can simulate windows programs in linux. And you can download a very good filter called qustodio(www.qustodio.com/) is a very complete filter.

I have edited this post to include a summary of my main suggestions for Linux users.  My edit follows.

Meetings

Go to open AA or NA meetings.  These have helped me a lot.  Even if you disliked your first meeting, don't give up.  Try three different meetings, and keep going back to whichever one you prefer.  Similar to what R' Avraham Twerski has once written, whenever they say "alcohol" or "drugs", think "lust".

NA seems to be mostly males, not females.  In NA, after the meeting, introduce yourself to people, say you're new, and schmooze with people.  If a person asks you what your drug of choice is, you can quietly tell him "pornography".  I think most of the drug addicts in NA have also struggled with pornography use, and they'll usually admit this to you once you've admitted it to them.

Note that SA meetings are almost 100% men.  In my city (Toronto), I've only ever seen one woman in SA, she's sexually sober, and she's anyway not usually present.

Window blinds

Keep your computer within view of a window, preferably facing a street, or else facing a neighbor's window.  Before using your computer, day or night, open the window blinds so that they're wide open and anyone can see in.

This tip is based on something I heard from a friend, who IIRC heard it from a rabbi.  I've found it to be a useful tip.

Linux filtering and monitoring software

IIRC R' Belsky recommends in Shulchan HaLevi (Israel Bookshop Publications) that every Jew should use both filtering and monitoring software.

In short, on Linux, here are the options available.  All are available for free.  Some are open-source.

For filtering

Use e2guardian if you can, or DansGuardian otherwise.  For more information on e2guardian, see page 3 of this thread.

e2guardian or DansGuardian work best if you have both a blacklist and a keywordlist.  I got these lists from somewhere, long ago. I don't remember where. I think I'm currently using the Shalla blacklist.

DansGuardian requires a downstream proxy server.  e2guardian might also; I'm not sure.  Nowadays I use Squid as a downstream proxy server.

For monitoring

Use NetResponsibility or RescueTime.  Connect your copy with someone else's account so that they can view your logs.

Combination products

Pluckeye can provide both filtering and monitoring.

Additional tips

No matter what else you use, you should also use OpenDNS FamilyShield both on your computer and your router.  FamilyShield isn't as powerful as a real filter, but it's a good adjunct to a filter -- an extra layer of defense.

IIRC I have blocked all of YouTube, since there is some bad content there and YouTube's "safety mode" isn't enough.

As far as I can tell, Wine does not work quite that way. It only works for some programs, not just everything. Am I mistaken?

Yes. I tried that, and still do. But I have not found any real solution that really works. Except one, besides Open DNS, and maybe another similar one, which I found so far. It is supposed to be a fiter, but I cannot figure out how to install it. This is a link;

Does no one on this forumn know much about Linux? This is quite frustrating. There must be many people with a great deal of knowledge about computers and Linux here.

On the other hand, maybe there is an inherent problem with Linux filtering. Also, in order to install this and many other programs in Linux, you have to know how to do it. I have not read much about it, and am just trying to see if someone can give me a quick suggestion as to which filter and how to install it. An answer to this question would most likely have to come from someone who has technical knowledge of Linux Mint.
