Isn't only for 12 months for everyone? so is the temperature just hotter the more you sin?

I am not an expert on this, but I do believe there are different levels of gehenim. I do believe each level down is worse than the previous.

I guess that's why the gemara says that a person who has a difficult wife will not see the face of gehinom.

A ratio of decades to one year sounds plausible given that the smell of gan eden was considered extremely valuable in this world.

I guess gehinom must be pretty effing hot.

Rav avigdor miller was always busy saying how someone with a good wife has to worry about gehinnom and how lucky someone who has a bad wife is in terms of saving himself a lot of very painful stuff in world to come

Sorry, I didn't understand. Do you mean to say your life for the past 30 years is like gehenim?

Can you please elaborate on that? I think I'd rather have a normal wife....

I think it's a bidieved, not a goal.

But it's good to know that suffering counts towards your account, even if it's in olam ha-ze.

That I got.

Why does one have to constantly put gehinom as a reason to feel good about suffering or a reason not to act out etc

Why can't we just focus on this world whilst we're here and deal with the problems we have in this world, and try find a solution from this world?

Not saying that gehimom isn't true but that's not what the focus should be, especially in this struggle... I feel like using such a excuse is another way of ignoring the problem and trying to bypass it...

I don't think you are disagreeing with anyone here.

I think these things are quoted in the hope that they will help. A lot of people are turned off by mussar. Those people should not read mussar. The best mussar for those people is "don't read mussar!"

It depends on what motivates you deep inside. We all may have similar lives but we do the same things for different reasons. So the same statement lands differently on different people.

I agree i'm just giving chizuk to someone who unfortanately ended up in a bad marital situation- that it will take away from Gehinnom which is a wonderful thing considering that that is millions of times worse than anything in this world. However in terms of using it as a detterent for flling if someone has that strong of a אמונה ביראת העונש  they probably wouldn;t be here . so for most people here probably better to focus on how much it;s ruining our lives to stay away and focus on practical tips not to fall,

Shnitz, not every situation has a solution that's in our control. Sometimes we have to look at this world and admit that there is nothing that we can do to change the people around us.
If soneone is in that situation, they're not ignoring the problem or trying to bypass it. It's out of their control. But it's nice to know that no suffering is in vain.
Even the smallest discomfort is recorded and credited, certainty the big stuff is as well.
