Aharon grabbed him abruptly by the sleeve and held him back. “Yoseph, don’t be so quick to criticize Avigdor.”

“I’m not criticizing, but how hard is it to say a shalom aleichem?”

“Would you believe, Yoseph, that my brother Avigdor is locked in a great battle with himself? His Torah is his only weapon against his own impulses, against his yetzer hara. Only with Torah can he keep himself pure. Believe me, he is a kind person, and he is proud of you — but he is caught in a battle.”

“I don’t understand. What kind of battle? Why is he different from you or me?”

“Levite, do you not sing the Psalms? Some start with the word mizmor, some start with shir, and some start with laminatzeiach — a song of victory! Let him be who he is, as you are who you are!”
