There's an old quote by Mark Twain: quitting smoking is easy, I've done it a hundred times ...

I can certainly attest to that. I quit smoking every Erev Shabbos and Erev Yom Tov!
I shall not die! But I shall live and relate the deeds of G-d.

Last week I gathered up the large collection of "schmutz" that I began accumulating about fifty years ago, and bundled it into trash bags for disposal. I also deleted the schmutz on my computer.
...

And this morning the last of the schmutz was picked up by the trash collection service. It took three weekly pickups, because of the quantity.

And I'm eighteen days clean.
I shall not die! But I shall live and relate the deeds of G-d.
[Psalms 118:17]

28 days clean, and a thought:

My BT path began about ten years ago. At this point, through prayer and Torah study, I think I've internalized the belief that Hashem is watching me all the time, and He wants me to observe His mitzvos. That is what's making it possible for me to stay clean.
I shall not die! But I shall live and relate the deeds of G-d.

That's interesting. I have found motivating thoughts from time to time but usually sharing that kind of thought also lets the air of the tires.

I also submit that cause and effect is not always easy to establish. Sometimes other factors are playing a role and they go unnoticed.

Have a great day.

The question is what do you want.
When I align my will with His Will and I WANT to do what He Wants then begins a transformative reality

I want to observe the 613 mitzvos, and I try to do so. Isn't that what He wants?

I see. I think we mean different things by the words want. I want p*** (and other things too!) but I know that Hashem wants me to want the 613 mitzvos. And in many cases after I have been acting out a mitzvah and learning about it I eventually do want it, because I understand why it's good. Until then I don't really want it, but sometimes I tell myself that I should want.

That's to be brutally honest.

mzl: No offense meant, but this is getting off the topic of my "What Works for Me" topic.

54 days (18 x 3).

The life crisis I'm dealing with has improved from "impossible" to "extremely difficult", thanks to Hashem. I didn't know if I would survive the last 24 hours, but I'm still here.

I absolutely need Hashem's help to get me through this. By staying clean, I hope that He will look favorably upon me and give me the support I need.

There's a relevant verse in this week's Parashah: "But you who cling to Hashem, your G-d, you are alive - all of you - today." [Devarim 4:4]
I shall not die! But I shall live and relate the deeds of G-d.
