Nice thought from Rabbi Frand about day to day challenges being more important than "BIG" challenges.  "lech lecha" more important than "ur kasdim".

I have a question that has been nagging me for a while.  Maybe the GYE talmidei chachomim can help me out.

Avrohom's middah was chessed.  His biggest test was going against that middah and being cruel, by sacraficing his son.

Yaakov's middah was emes.  His test was going against that middah to "cheat" Eisav (and Lavan).

Yitzchak is gevurah.  What was his test to go agaist that middah?

I just asked a respected mechanech after maariv.  He said that R Yaakov (i think) asks the question.  He answers based on the gemarra in shabbos where hashem tells avrohom and yaakov that the yidden are doing aveiros and neither one comes to their defense.

He then asks Yitzchak, and Yitzchak gives all sorts of excuses for them, how much could they sin anyway, they eat, they sleep etc.  That is the opposite of his middah of gevurah/din.

There are obviously a lot of questions on this, but it's the best I have so far.

Feel free to add your own.

By Amnon and Tamar, we find that after he raped her he hated her and didn't want to marry her.  By Shchem ben Chamor, after he raped Dinah, he loved her and wanted to marry her.

What's the difference?

Something I posted a while ago, but is inyana d'yoma now:

gibbor120 wrote on 07 Sep 2011 16:30:

The gemara in megilah 25b discusses different kriyas hatorah and whether we should read them in public and be metargem (translate) them.  The gemarah says that the maaseh of Yehudah and Tamar, we read and translate in shul.

The gemarah asks, Pekichsaa?! Obvious.  (oh, I see i got the kichsa edit for P e s h i t a)

The gemara answers, I would think that we should be concerned about the kavod of Yehuda.

KM"L - Since he admitted it - THIS IS HIS PRAISE!

This gemarah was a big chizzuk for me.  The gemarah doesn't say that we can learn a lot from Yehuda's mistake.  The gemarah says, that there is nothing to be embarrased about.  If we admit our mistakes - it is a source of PRIDE for us!

Here's an amazing rabeinu bachya!  He basically says that our neshamos were told during the 6 days of creation everything that would happen in our lives and we accepted it ברצון! Knowing everything, we still wanted to be created!

A great thought to internalize!

It's kedai to see inside.

Good question.  I'm not sure that we do in fact have a choice whether to be born or not.  Perhaps the point is simply that when we see things clearly, we do want to be born to this life.  Kind of like matan torah.  I think some explain that holding the mountain over us just means that it was so clearly good and correct that we couldn't refuse.

Or perhaps, al korchach is based on our perspective after being born.  I guess I need to understand what the point of that mishna is.  What is it telling us?  Don't we know that living and dying are not our choice?

Just thinking out loud.  I have to think about it more.

looked up the gemara
i think pashut pshat is that the first briyos at maasei breishis knew what they're getting into but that's it, rabeinu bachya extends this idea to be relevant to all people in later generations
