The question you ask has been brought up many, MANY times. My personal thought is that before any other step of teshuva, we need to stop doing the aveirah. That's according to rabbeinu Yonah. And right now, by trying to use a torah mehalech, for most people, certainly delays their "stopping the aveirah (else, they would have already stopped, they wouldn't be on GYE).

So step 1 is to stop poisoning yourself. By any means possible. if you saw someone worshipping avodah zorah, would you be intellectualizing what the best way to stop is, or would you drag him away by any means possible and necessary?
