Filter DESPERATELY Needed for Chromebook 14 May 2023 06:45 #395636

Hey all.
I recently got a new Chromebook (replacing an old HP Laptop), and immediately installed the same filter I had (Qustodio) on it, ready to keep on rolling and growing.
(SPOILER: Didn't happen that way.)
Turns out that Qustodio doesn't work so well with a Chromebook, and that simply putting Chrome in Incognito mode disables the Qustodio extension, leaving the Internet completely unfiltered. I've now fallen 4 times in the past week alone after being clean for almost the entirety of January-April before this. (NOTE: There is an option in Chrome's settings to add the extension for Incognito mode as well, but this can simply be disabled with a single click, and I don't know of a way to lock the settings.)
The way I see it, I've got three options:
1) Find out a way to install the filter (and keep it locked) even on Incognito mode, which is the simplest solution, but I don't know of a way to yet.
2) Find out a way to disable Incognito mode from being opened entirely. This would also solve the problem, but I don't believe there's any way to stop this from being done.
3) Get a new filter. This would be complicated, as I would have to convince my parents that the current filter is faulty without revealing what I'm struggling with. While I could definitely make up a story of some kind (Saw an inappropriate pop-up ad which the filter is supposed to block, etc.), my tech sense tells me that regardless of whichever filter I get, I'll be able to revert back to disabling it if I can't find a way to deploy options 1 & 2.

So please, any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I was doing so well before this issue came up, and suddenly I find myself reverting to the filth and evil that I'd been free from for months (at a terrible time too, due to the fact that I'm on track to start Shidduchim relatively soon). Please feel free to give Eitzos of any kind. I'm listening.

Hope everybody else is doing well. Hatzlacha to all.

I'm sorry if this is silly, but is getting a laptop an option at this point?
In terms of the timing, I mamash feel you- you will probably also feel more confident about yourself in shidduchim with a good filter installed.

There are many filters that work even on incognito mode. Gentech, Netspark, etc. Like mentioned, call TAG.

Regarding the issues you mentioned. How important is it to you?

Most of the popular filters you list here dont work on Chromebooks

Have your parents listen to this Halacha headlines. It is actually what drove me to GYE.

If TAG tells you they cannot provide a reliable filter for a Chromebook, I think having your parents listen to this shiur and hearing the statistics of bachurim who are being exposed to this will help you have the discussion with them about why it is critical that you only have access to devices that can be reliably filtered without having to directly tell them that you are one of the statistics.

Based on what he said before it sounds like an awkward conversation

Here are some steps you can take for a chromebook. You can use each of these on it's own or combined together for the best results.

The best would be to get someone who has a Google Workspace Account with a Chrome management subscription to manage the device and force these settings so that you cannot change them. (for example: Block incognito mode, force dns settings, setup URL allow or block lists, force install extensions, etc...).
Truple is the next best thing. your accountability partner will get the screenshots of your screen and a tamper alert if you try to disable it. It should be combined with the DNS filter or Plucky extension (Or both).
  1. set the DNS settings to cleanbrowsing.org family filter. (cleanbrowsing.org/help/docs/configure-doh-on-chrome-browsers-via-google-workspace-admin-panel/)
    IPv4
    • 185.228.168.168
    • 185.228.169.168
    IPv6

    DNS-Over-HTTPS (DOH)doh.cleanbrowsing.org/doh/family-filter/
    DNS-Over-TLS (DOT)family-filter-dns.cleanbrowsing.org
    iOS Mobile-ConfigDownload Config
  2. Use Truple Screenshot accountability (support.truple.io/articles/chromeos/setup-chromebook)
  3. Use Plucky lite and setup a proper time delay and configuration to block out images, sites, etc... (chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pluck-lite/chnpoommpdaincgmgkdgmgllfppffncf) visit pluckeye.net for more details.

May you have much success!

TAG can filter Chromebooks. Either whitelist or Gentech.

I don't think that is a helpful comment here.
The bottom line is pick up the phone and call TAG. There are very good and strong filter solutions for Chromebooks.

Re: Filter DESPERATELY Needed for Chromebook 21 May 2023 05:30 #395945

So grateful for (but not at all surprised by, given the time I've spent here) the incredible support and advice I've received, thank you to all who gave eitzos, and especially to those who reached out.
I spoke with HHM and worked out a plan for telling my parents about the deficiencies of the filter on the Chromebook without giving away my situation. They agreed that it's definitely a problem, but weren't sure about how to proceed, for now we agreed that I can only use the device in a public space (where I can be seen) and we will look into upgrading to a different filter or locking the Chrome settings so that (as LionKing suggested-extraordinarily helpful) Incognito mode cannot be opened.
All in all, definitely doing much better than I was at this time last week, Thank God. BE"H, it will only get better. So grateful for my incredible supporting cast.
Thanks again to all those who gave practical solutions/motivation & support. Much appreciated, God bless you all.
