we played a game called "pass the parcel"
where a ball of newspaper full of wrapped goodies is passed around, and when the music stops you are allowed to try to tear out a goodie
but while the happy music plays nobody gets any goodies
only when the music stops only then you have the opportunity to grab a goodie
same here when its dull, no happy music, thats when you have the opportunity to grow and gain leverage

i lately had an interesting thought, i wonder if anyone has some scope to it
are we supposed to love hashem with unconditional love, being our life good or bad
or because we know that whatever comes from hashem (which is everything) is purely good, therefore we love him for being so good to us
or maybe its a combi, that there has to be unconditional love in any case, but because we know that everything is good, so therefore our love to him is even greater, but thats not the reason for the love

See Mesilas Yesharim chapter 19. He explains that people on a simple level should love Hashem because all He does is actually good even if we do not see it. But those on a higher level should leave their ego out of it and love Hashem unconditionally.

if we want to be able to give unconditional love to our well deserved wife
we ought to give it to hashem
so it will mirror back
