Bardichev,
I'd like to share with you an idea that I learned in the Kedushas Levi, the "other" Bardichever ;-).
The question was asked to R' Levi Yitzchok in medinas lita why is shavuos called atzeres.
He famously gives three answers:
1) Pshat: All other holidays have two aspects to them; the performance of a mitzvah and the prohibition of melacha--work. Shavuos doesn't have a mitzvahs asei like matzoh or esrog associated with it...therefore all there is to do is "stop working" or atzeres.
2) Shavuos is the completion of the mitzvah of sefira therefore on shavuos we have "stopped" counting.
3) As we came close to matan torah the people were inspired they wanted to "do" something; they wanted to get close to Hashem, but Hashem needed them to stop, he needed them to focus. Therefore Moshe Rabeinu was required to institute the concept of hagbala...or surrounding of the mountain...don't touch! Or "stop" doing.
Three beautiful answers to a simple question from R' Levi Yitzchok, zt"l. And just as he has given klal yisroel this beautiful Torah about "stopping" you are following in his footsteps and encouraging others to "stop" something else. May the zikaron of R' Levi Yitzchok zt"l be a melitz yosher for you and your entire family and may you be zoche to sit b'm'chitzaso in gan eden!
