Derech Eretz and respect for other people - women, children, rashaim, non-white-shirt-wearers, goyim, etc. is integral for our own self-respect, and recovery from many, many things.  Caring about how others feel is one of the best things we can do for ourselves.

Now, I am not saying that we need to treat everyone equally - wear sheitels ourselves, put tefillin on women and let children cross the road by themselves...
