New to GYE 19 Jul 2012 15:03 #141998

I was caught veiwing p**n by my wife (again) eleven month ago. She said I needed to find an SA group because it was quite obvious I could not quit on my own (she had asked me a few times before and -of course- I agreed, but did not have it in me to follow through).
As I have been interested in conversion to Judaism for some time, I had found Aish.com online about 2 years ago. September 2011 I was studying some material on Aish when I came across an article where a woman said she was desperate and did not know what to do about her husband's addiction to p**n. The article directed me to GYE.com. I saw it was a site dedicated to religious Jews of which I was neither. What I did have in common with them was that I was not a Christian and I had an addiction. I signed up to recieve the daily Chizuk. That is when/where I found out about the 12 step program. Also, the more I read Chizuk, the more I came to understand I needed to be part of an SA group. I found and reluctantly joined an SA group sponsored by a local Christian church. For some time I felt like an outsider as I am not a Christian. After talking it over with my wife and Dov (of this forum) I recently came to understand that they accept me as a fellow recovering addict, notwithstanding I am not a Christian. So I attend the meetings, take strength from them and share of my own experiences.
I have been "sober" since August of last year, with 2 slips since (viewing some inaprpriate pictures on my computer and feeling terrible about it).
One of the SA guys was recently talking about what he was going through and I offered to share with him -one on one, my experiences. We have developed quite a friendship since and I feel more inspired to stay clean and be an encouragment to him and others.
I have a wonderful wife of 17 years and a fervent joy and motivation to continue with the SA group, GYE.org and the nightly phone conference. I also intend to continue studying Hebrew and learning all there is about the Jews so one day I will be worthy of conversion.

Wow! That's an amazing story. Other then me being Jewish, I think we may be twins.
I'm also sober since last August, married for about as long as you are, go to SA meetings in churches (and felt quite uncomfrotable there as I am not Christian), was directed to SA with G-d's help through GYE, made peace with the program as I've seen its miracles, had one slip over the last year watching (very briefly) some inappropriate stuff on my computer. I, too, was caught a few times by my wife, every time promissing to "never again".
I have a friend in SA, who is mormon and who also found SA through GYE.
As you know, we don't encourage conversions, but if you ever go through with it, I trust you will be an example and an inspiration to all born Jews. In Yiddish we say, that "a gevorene is besser fun a geboirene", someone who "became" is better than the one who was "born".
Please stay on the forum and keep encouraging and inspiring us all.
Really nice to "meet" you,
Mottel
Baby steps.
If the road is pulling you down, it's a sign that you are going uphill, so just press harder on the gas!

Have a great day - unless, of course, you made other plans.

Wow. Thanks for the inspiration. Sometimes we(or should I say I) think if only we weren't Jewish this wouldn't be a problem.... U tell us otherwise, a problem is a problem. An addiction is an addiction. No matter what when where or how.

Good luck,

I am amazed, humbled, and thankful. I really never thought anyone would read my post, let alone take chizuk from it.
The coincidences continue. The Christian SA group I had joined was actually a Mormon group. I stayed with them for a year but got fed up with all the proselytizing. By then, I had been attending (to this day) the night conference calls. I was going there to learn how to implement the 12 steps, not to be converted to something I simply cannot believe in. I was born and raised a Christian but always had more questions than satisfactory answers. Finally I learned about the Noahides and became one myself. Finally, questions answered.

Keep up the good fight.

I am amazed, humbled, and thankful. I really didn’t believe anyone would read my post. I am happy to update and tell you that I have been named a moderator for the GYE forum in Spanish. I am no longer attending the Christian SA group as it was all Mormons more interested in proselytizing than in putting the 12 step program into practical use. I continue to attend the night conference calls and am very happy to report that the 12 steps work for me when I work them into my everyday life.
Thank you for your words of encouragement.
