Just a couple of random things (and a shameless excuse to bump my thread  :o :-[ ).

I'm sure this has been expressed here before, and maybe there's a source in a Sefer. But this thought came to me recently and it resonates with me very strongly every day.

We say in Shema, "VeOhavto eis Hashem....Bechol Nafshecha..." The word Nafshecha can be understood to mean "desire", as in "Im Yaish es nafshechem...". So we say that we love Hashem with all our desires, that we give up our deepest needs and wants to do His will. "Afilu Hu Noteil es Nafshecha", even if we have to give up our most cherished desires, the things that we feel that we would die without.....

The same idea can be applied to many other places where the term "nefesh" is used. For example, "V'Samach Nafsheinu BiYshuosecha", may we find joy in desiring Your salvation (rather than other things...).

*************************************

I posted this one a while back...

I saw an article a while back from a (not-frum) "bible scholar" who claimed that the Alef Bais we have today is not in its original order, specifically that the Ayin and Peh were originally reversed. He brings all kinds of "proofs" from Tanach and other sources. I will not go into all of them and why they are all shtusim...

One of his proofs was from Tehillim 34, Ledovid Beshanoso es Taamo.. The relevant pesukim:

Posuk טז refers to the tzaddik, the next one refers to the rasha, and the following ones presumably refer back to the tzaddik's tefillos being answered. He therefore claims that by reversing the first two pesukim the flow of the meaning makes more sense.

I was davening one recent Shabbos morning and I suddenly realized the answer. The two pesukim of Tadi and Kuf are also talking about the Rasha! Hashem shows His anger to the rasha and threatens to remove him from the world. He cries out and Hashem hears and saves him. How can that be? The answer is in the following pasuk. Even a rasha, if he breaks his heart and subjugates his spirit, Hashem listens....

I recently looked it up, and it's actually a Machlokes in the Meforshim. Rashi and Radak say that those Pesukim refer to the Tzaddik, while Ibn Ezra and Metzudos read it my way.

Last night we temporarily opened the filter just so my wife could show me this. She thought it was just cute, but to me it's the best mussar shmooze i ever saw.

http://vimeo.com/6591011

And here's some background on it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deferred_gratification

It's something called the Marshmallow Test. Basically you put a 4 year old kid alone in a room with one marshmallow for 20 minutes. If they don't eat it, they get a second one at the end. It's amazing to watch as they struggle with the temptation. The faces they make, how they squeeze it, smell it, lick it, sneak tiny bites hoping the teacher wont notice. Not all of them made it to the end.

I almost burst out in tears, because that's what i feel like all the time. I am surrounded by "marshmallows" that i must fight to ignore, knowing that a great reward awaits me for doing so. But it's so tempting, just a little look, a little daydream....

I know that when i was a kid i could not have passed the test. We had contests in school where we got tickets for being good and knowing stuff, and we could save them up for bigger prizes. Or we could go to the office and get a candy for 1 or 2 tickets. I was always buying candy....

very interesting. i couldn't see the video (K9) but your description is enough.

while this is entirely true it is also helpful to remember that when we guard our eyes or defer on a lust opportunity we are building ourselves positively as well. we are getting in the habit of being holy - or sane. we are building ourselves as a good person. we are not just 'not eating the marshmallow'.

I actually was able to save a copy of the video but it's a huge file (about 11 meg). I will try to attach it here...

Warning: there is a slightly untzniusdig woman in it.

Note: I had to re-upload it as a zip file, download it and open it to play the video.
