Your'e a real good man, gesher. and TZ
(BTW, I changed and added to my name to make the idea clearer and maybe cooler. although now I'm thinking maybe it would have been better to start with something like John Smith to begin with. I don't know too much about this stuff.)

see that TZ there is such achdus between us
that he called us "a real good man."

MB youre a good man also. every yid is good

HKBH wants us at all times, no matter what we've done

I saw something this Shabbos that reminded me of this thread. In my opinion it fits. Let me know what you guys think.
Its brought down that Moshe had to make an accounting for every penny donated to the mishkan. Whereas by the eigel no such accounting was called for. Most mforshim use this to show that when it comes to our own desires we are willing to spend without thinking but when it comes to ruchniyus (Torah and mitzvos) sudenly we are very careful about each and every cent. Rav Sorotzkin in Ozayim L'Torah takes another approach. Based on the concept, used by forcing a man to give a get, that essentially a yid wants to do good, his YH just gets in the way. When it came to the mishkan the yidden knew that this the real thing and they wanted to know that the mitzvah was being done properly. But by the eigel, deep down they didnt really want to do that so they werent so concerned about how it was done and where each penny was spent. It's a nice limud zechus for klal yisroel. But I saw it in a different light.
In relation to the topic of this thread, one could use the same logic. Essentially we are good and we want our maasim, and our teshuva, to be 100%. Whe we get caught up in the "eigel" (each person has his own weakness that we'll call his eigel) we dont really give it much thought. We just go after it without really thinking about how much we are putting into it. But when we are doing the real stuff, torah mitzvos and teshuva, we want to make sure that its 100%.

I really enjoy the idea. Very positive outlook. It's so true, the second we start thinking the Y"H loses all control over us, he only lives in the physical drives we share with our neighbor's cat.

so this shabbos i came across another gem from the Oznayim L'Torah.
the pasuk forbids se'or and d'vash to be burnt on the mizbeach
he quotes Rabbeinu Bachya
that se'or is the yetzer hara of avodah zara and d'vash is the yetzer hara of desire.
se'or is never permitted in a korban
d'vash is permitted for the kohanim to mix with the shirayim of the mincha
chazal got rid of the yetzer hara of avodah zara and tried to do the same to the yetzer hara of desire. It wasnt possible because the world couldnt function that way.
avodah zara has no place whatsoever in our lives
women have to have a place in our lives
so the yetzer hara of desire had to be kept around

Now I know everyone is going to say love and lust are not the same thing etc...
but as the mesilas yesharim says everything (desire included) has us in a dilemna between proper and inproper usage.

i just mentioned this because it rings true with a point that i made at the begining of this thread. In some ways i feel that chazal knew how dangerous desire could be, but didnt have any solution for dealing with it. They couldnt get rid of it. so we are left to find our own ways of dealing with it.

Tonight I heard Rav Zev Leff speak
he quoted from the Michtav Me'Eliyahu
that each generation has its own yetzer hara
and you have to fight fire with fire.
You cant expect to win over today's youth with the Rambam's Moreh Nevuchim
The Rambam wrote that to combat the yetzer hara of his day.
For our dor we need tools that fight our yetzer hara
for me that is as clear as possible the need for new ways to fight this yetzer hara
if its the 12 steps, or whatever it takes.

Obviously, a layman like myself cannot figure out one bit what the Heilige Bardichiver (and his fellow cohorts) are talkin' about, but it was a chiddush to me that he was already referrin' to my friend before she even became my friend, and how did he know that she has a big sykolodjee? Actually, she even has a degree in it and practices (on me)! Oh well; never freg kashas oif a Rebbe!
