another suggestion may be that along with the "Show new replies" & "Show new posts", there can be a "Show new THREADS" which will show all new thread which were recently started.

Maybe there can also be a "Show short (/new) threads" link too.

[The system does keep track of how many replies a thread has, on every menu/index page the icon shows one, two, or three pages based on how many replies are in the thread already.
