(shrugging emoticon) I can only speak for myself. I had a long conversation with my rebbe about it years ago, discussing my feeling of wanting to, vs. feeling pressure to, etc.

Kol HaKavod.  I think the percentage of people who learn in Kollel who asked a Sheilah first is in the low single digits (if that high).

two kollel guys, yanky and moishy were arguing about how to learn a rambam, moishy was relying on a brisker interpretation while yanky on one by the alter rebbi...their whole life they argued about this rambam...when they died and reached heaven, they had the great fortune of meeting the rambam himself and they asked him, nu, which is it? the rambam looked at them perplexed and said, "cant you guys read what i wrote? you guys are both wrong, i simply meant it like it was written"..to which yanky and moishy looked at each other and said, "nu. what does a sfardi know about learning a rambam"

LOL.  Reminds me of a slightly different version, where Yanky spent his whole life being Medayeik in every letter of the Rambam.  But, in one place, he could not explain why the Rambam worded the Halacha as he did.  When he died and went upstairs, he asked the Rambam why he used that wording.  The Rambam responded: "Oh, that was Lav Davka!"

Could be - I hope that when i die, I'll be close enough to the Rambam to ask him  ;D

But then again, who makes up the jokes? Someone could just as easily say that about rashi...or the gemara itself...or mishnayos. Very possibly, people in the time of the amora'im made the same jokes about all those guys being medayeik in the mishnayos...just replace a few wrods, and the joke is the same!

True - but sometimes, even when we're sure about something, it's a good idea to ask - especially when it's a major decision like that, and we have so many things pulling us in different directions - "the family needs more money, but I also want luxuries, but what will the neighbors say, and is this really the right thing for me to do?" I could go on for paragraphs with all the different factors that pull at our minds at times like that - some of them valid, some not. And that makes thing very unclear.

I'm not questioning your decision - but the fact that someone's sure about something doesn't always mean he's right.

Does ANYONE ask if they should learn in Kollel to begin with?  Hardly ever - because they "know" the answer.
As one of my rabbeim once said to me; " are you in israel long enough to know what SHTU'YOT means?!?!?!

its funny because the rambam was a very straight shooter and was very good with hebrew language and grammar while the alter rebbi and the brisker rav (and those that follow that path) are usually not either one...
All my years learning dude....................i have no flippin clue who the alter rebbe is?? :D :D :D :D ??? ??? :D :D

No - are you saying it's shtuyot that they don't ask, that I think they don't ask, or that I'm implying that they should ask?  You're entitled to your opinion, but I have no idea what it is.

Im saying its shtu'yot WHY they dont ask. I would say they dont ask becuase their afraid that their Rosh Yeshiva will  tell them NOT to learn and rather go to work!

I guess im still not being understood. You said that boys dont ask cuz they know what the answer is. Implying that theyll be told to go to kolle. But im disagreeing and saying the reason why they dont ask cuz theyre afraid to hear that they should go to work and not go to kollel.
