You can view the channels that pop up on the "home page", but when you attempt to search for other channels the app crashes. They currently can only have it blocked globally on Android devices - as long as you have their filter installed, and are working on a filtering solution for IOS.

I am told that he has a a version of Whatapp without channels at all.

They don't write there that it can't be filtered, it's just an alert that each person should review his needs and his devices to make sure it's appropriate.
