a. the ipod only plays video you allow it to play. If you create an itunes account with someone that wont abuse it holding the password there's no risk (slightly easier said than done, I'm aware)
b. when I was in high school(only about 6 years ago) I had a creative NOMAD. very nice mp3 player, no video no radio. easy to use and pick songs. It met an untimely end and I got an ipod. never went back simply because of the apple warranty. also not sure what the new model is like, but thought I'd mention it.
