I'm amused that since I can't check Facebook anymore, which is what I'd do on the computer in between breaks, I now come here to GYE instead, l'havdil elef havdalos.

A friend of mine, a guy who learned in yeshiva, emailed me asking why I got off of Facebook. My response:

"Even though I know it seems strange, better that I should look silly in the eyes of others for getting off Facebook than continue to commit the aveiros Facebook was facilitating: bittul zman, kalus rosh with the ladies, and shmiras einayim problems.

Here's a halacha straight from Shulchan Aruch:

צריך האדם להתרחק מן הנשים מאד מאד. אסור לקרוץ בידיו או ברגליו ולרמוז בעיניו לאשה. ואסור לשחוק עמה להקל ראשו כנגדה או להביט ביפיה.....והמסתכל אפילו באצבע קטנה של אשה ונתכוין ליהנות ממנה עונו גדול מאד

This stuff is halacha, not some chumra.... and the social mixing between the genders applies online too, especially when it'll cause me to be מסתכל with enjoyment at more than just an אצבע קטנה.

If it spares me even one aveira even one time, or bittul zman, then it's well worth it, and I believe it has. "

You weren't trying to be "holier-than-thou" - you were being honest, about an issue which is really dangerous! If he gets offended, it's not because you wrote it in the wrong way - it's because he's being defensive.

I think that although we should never make ourselves sound too proud, we should also not feel apologetic for standing up and saying the truth.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A north Florida mother has pleaded guilty to shaking her baby to death after the boy’s crying interrupted her game on Facebook.

Alexandra V. Tobias pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Wednesday and remains jailed.

The Florida Times-Union reported that she told investigators she was angered because the boy was crying while she was playing the game FarmVille. The paper also reported that she told investigators she shook the boy, smoked a cigarette to compose herself and then shook him again.

According to WJXT-TV.com, Tobias called 911 and frantically said, “He’s only 14 weeks old; he’s not breathing.

The TV station also reported that after the 911 call, Tobias told investigators that a dog knocked her baby off the couch and that the baby hit his head and stopped breathing.

She will be sentenced in December. State guidelines call for 25 to 50 years, but a prosecutor said it could be shorter than that.

I originally stopped in here to report on a social site I had checked out a few years ago.  I was still getting updates from them, and I wanted to stop these E-mail updates.  At first you could find out information for free, but then they started charging; you couldn't find out anything except the person's name.

So, I signed on to cancel these E-mails (really, I should just cancel the account).  I was greeted with a big offer "SIGN UP NOW FOR A FREE YEAR MEMBERSHIP--A VALUE OF $150).  I clicked to close the screen.  Another screen popped up, "ARE YOU REALLY SURE YOU WANT TO CLOSE THIS SCREEN?  SIGN UP NOW FOR A FREE YEAR MEMBERSHIP--A VALUE OF $150."  I clicked "YES" I really do want to close the screen.  I'm really not interested in your membership.
