This is definitely not a new question but it just came up for me. I had to ask a store worker a fairly long question and she was the only one in the store - and really attractive. I was sort of trying to avoid eye contact while trying not to look like a weirdo with my eyes darting everywhere but at her - and I  probably ended up failing at both. I don't want her to feel like she's some piece of trash that I won't look it but at the same time I couldn't think of any other way to avoid improper thoughts. 

This seems like some middah kneged middah for me having made fun of charedi people that won't look at women in the eye when talking to them. :-[

What do all you guys do?

You'll get better at it...
You look like you're looking at her, but you're really looking "past" her... This way, she doesn't really notice...

remove your glasses if that's an option.

And yeah, looking past works well but takes some practice.
