My college/yeshiva just announced that it was going to start filtering campus internet for the shmutz of the like that we're caught up with. I dont know how effective it will be, and based on my experience with filters, I will not be somach on it as my only fence. But I feel that it could definitely deter people from at the very least simple access. The issue some were having before this was enacted was that technically the school is publically funded, and they want to "practice" Yiddishkeit in their own way. Their own way often included what this filter intends on excluding, and that sort of forces them to do the right thing.

I was curious, what is the oilam's take on this? Will it help? is it a productive attempt?

How can it hurt?

Of course a filter alone is not a solution, just a tool, but an important one. And I don't see why the school should be obligated to provide the students access to "everything".

I'm not sure it could hurt per se. it's sort of the fact that it's forced upon them, some of whom arent ready or willing to be clean. the question is more about whether that is right or not. like, if you had a bunch of alcoholics in a country and all of sudden the government banned alcohol, and controlled it to the point that there really was next to none, would that make them better people, or would it just leave a population of grouchy sober addicts that will fill their void with something else, potentially (Ch"V) rebellion against the Torah, which calls for such an action.
