Stealing From Parents 02 Nov 2011 02:03 #123807

I live in Brooklyn. I have a knack of stealing money from my parents. I need this money for Yeshiva and to hang out with my friends. My family doesn't have so much money. My father usually does not like to give me money and I feel bad constantly asking my mother. Therefore, at night I come upstairs while everybody is sleeping and I steal money straight from my mothers wallet. I know this has nothing to do with shmiras eynayim but I figured that it is considered a Taivah so any help would be much appreciated. I feel really bad but I feel like I have to do it.

tricky one.  As far as I know it's in the Impulse Control Disorder category.  I, too, don't want to do immoral things, but I just can't control it, and I can come up with 1000 excuses.  What are you doing exactly with the money?  "Hanging out with friends".  Uh, what does that entail precisely?
Recovery in 6 words:  Trust H".  Clean House.  Help others.

is this an impulse or a justified repeat behavior.  the difference being how you approach it.  one would need therapy type approach (not therapy per se, but the approach) and one would need just sitting down being honest and stopping.

Complicated.  Are you addicted to stealing?  There is such an addiction.  Some call it a compulsion.  There's even a wealthy actress with the disorder.  If so, recovery techniques might work.  Why is it complicated?  Because you think you need the money and that's why you're doing it.  So you're going to have to be very honest with yourself.

If you're not addicted, then a shmuz might be all you need.  Like how we're in this world to be givers and stealing is the ultimate act of taking.  It demonstrates lack of emunah that Hashem gives you exactly what you need.  Since the world was created for giving, the dor hamabul, who were steeped in stealing, caused the world's destruction.  There was no point in the world continuing to exist.

Don't like the shmuz?  Re-read the first paragraph.

Keep on shteiging.  You're going to work all this out and be a fine catch some day.

Maybe you can look into a job. I am sure you have thought about that option, so I do not want to sound like I am speaking down or sarcastic.

Baby steps.
If the road is pulling you down, it's a sign that you are going uphill, so just press harder on the gas!

Have a great day - unless, of course, you made other plans.
