Actually, interestingly enough, it seems that on shavuos, there's more of a reason to be involved in gashmiyus, because once you have torah, gashmiyus will be raised onto the level of ruchniyos. That's why shavuos is the only time during the year when chametz is brought as a korban - because with torah, gashmiyus will be used for the right purposes.

Yes, good vort ! I read somewhere the same theme from the Ishbitzer (Mei HaShiloach). He explains a deep meaning of the pasuk in Ruth 2:9 (which we read on Shavuos) that after we accomplish serving Hashem through "restriction" then we can move on to the stage of serving him through "expansion" including doing those things which we wouldn't dare do during the "restriction" stage. (Note to self: don't try this at home, this idea is for professionals only :-X ).

The Chinuch says that one of the reasons for Simcha on Yom Tov is that a person needs times of happiness to survive healthily... So Hashem made it a Mitzva so that the things we need to do should get rewarded....

I look at the Torah as a guide to living a fulfilling life.
Hashem needs nothing form us... He wants us to be fulfilled so he taught us how....

Oneg Shabbos is no different...
We need it... and we get rewarded for it....
