We say in Tefila: משיב הרוח ומוריד הגשם
The pasuk can be read as such:
Hashem returns the spirituality when we
bring down the gashmiut in our life.
A story is told of a traveler who onced asked the
Chofets Chaim where his furniture was - why he
lacked furniture. The Chofets Chaim responded
to the man, "Where is your furniture?" The traveler
said, "What do you mean? I am traveling so I didn't
bring any furniture along." The Chofets Chaim answered
similarly, "I too am only traveling on a short journey in this
world. My furniture is in the world to come."
Our Gedolim knew the purpose of life and separated
themselves from the gashmiut of this world and
focused only on the Torah and their ruchniyut.
May we be zoceh to learn from them to separate
ourselves from the emptiness of this world and
solely focus our attention on the world to come.
It is only through separating (limiting) our selves
from gashmiut that we will truly be able to attain
spirituality and see the beauty of the Torah.
Chazal say that the pit that Yosef was thrown in
was empty and had no water. Chazal learn from
here that it contained snakes and scorpions. If a
person's mind doesn't contain the Torah (water) then
automatically it will contain snakes and scorpions
(peritsut) Hashem Yerachem.
