How to avoid, in an unavoidable situation 21 Feb 2011 22:07 #97909

Hey Everyone!
I wanted to ask around for some suggestions for the following scenario that I am going to find myself in, this coming weekend.
I am going to be in a place (for I guess vacation)  where I will have unlimited access to a computer with internet and also to a TV with cable. There will be many times throughout the day (and especially at night) where noone (except HaShem) is going to be watching what I am doing. Also I am a bochur so I don't have a wife to keep me an eye on me. I will not be having a set schedule where I can preoccupy myself with activities and I wont be able to find a chavrusa. It would be hard for me to say that I strictly wont use the computer because i am going to need it. However the TV- I guess i can go cold turkey except for sports. ( But how? especially if I may turn it on to watch a sports game?)
Any other questions about what the scenario is, you can ask. I really hope, with the help of HaShem to pass this test with flying colors.
I feel that this situation happens to a lot of people many times. A situation where your not in the normal setting your used to, and could therefore fall hard, if you don't prepare properly beforehand. So I feel that this would be great to discuss for everyone's sake.
Thank You

i sometimes wonder what i would do if faced with a similar situation. thankfully it has not presented itself.
sounds frighteningly hard.
maybe bring some really good reading material, 3500 pc. model galleon, write an unabridged autobiography or something else to keep you busy
do you have a friend you can be in contact with as the need arises?
another good idea might be to have a very frank talk with the RBSO about the situation

If you are concerned about your well being and don't feel you have the tools to handle the situation then do you really need to go??

Otherwise:

1) Go with lots of phone numbers of people to call.
2) Ditch the remote - take it to the front desk or something.
3) Unplug the computer and do the same with the cord
4) PRAY like your life depends on it.  It does!

Oh and have fun

thanks for your responses!
Re - ZemirosShabbos
I do have a book to take with me, so that should keep me occupied for part of the time.
I'm not sure about the model though

Re- Jooboy
Well the situation calls for me needing to go. Its not really a vacation. I dont have a choice.
And yes 2 is a good- If Im watching a game- Ill put the remote in another room. I hope that will work.
3- Cant really do that because it belongs to someone else!
I do hope to try to speak with some friends and try to use up my time.

If you must watch a game, you surely don't need to watch the commercials or halftime entertainment (if any).

Whose computer is it?  Would anything stop you from installing a filter and/or monitoring software?

Sorry I am late to this conversation. I started thread about shemiras einayim when travelling some time ago. It is not exactly the same situation, but it may be worth looking at.

I am not big enough to not do something I WANT to do because I know it is wrong, but I've been around long enough not to want to do many things, even though they are really enticing at the first glance.

I was in a similar situation recently.
I strongly advise unplugging the TV. Is it necessary to watch sports when the usual habbit is to flip through channels?
