This is an emergency situation. I am in a yeshiva where there is an unlocked wifi signal which is broadcast into the dorm. I know for a fact that there are guys that are and do watch porn to extreme levels. The problem is that the owner of the wifi doesn't seem to be willing to lock his wifi. Anyone have any ideas. There may be no other ways to stop this, but maybe someone has some way. Thank you very much.

what about telling the rosh yeshiva or the mashgiach?

or writing a polite, non-accusatory and articulate letter to the fellow outlining what can be accessed by the many young bochurim if there are no restrictions on the wifi.

offer to pay for a technician to come down and configure it

offer to daven/learn for his zechus for a day/week/month if he will comply

threats and strong-arm tactics are dramatic but need to be used only under guidance

Not that I know about this stuff, but I hear that it isn't smart to have an unsecured internet connection. It can leave your computer succeptible to (a)viruses.

I just read a few of these Google hits - www.google.com/search?q=how+to+block+an+unsecured+wifi&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&client=firefox-a&rlz=1R1GGLL_en___US378 - and the only solution that seems workable is similar to what Me3 said - explain to the neighbor how much of a threat this is to him - how strangers can hack into his network and his computer (identity theft, viruses, etc).

Thanks everyone for the replies. Let me explain a bit more without giving out too much info and getting myself in trouble. It seems this person who ownes the wi-fi is not a jew, and therefor doesn't understand the concepts we live by too clearly. Again, without saying too much, the R'Y knows about the internet, but claims that there is no way to stop people from getting on. Maybe there is a way to see somehow where people are connecting from which would be a deterrent to the bachurim from going on? I don't know what to do, but its a very very scary situation and I'm truly worried.

A goy would understand the danger of viruses and hacking. He doesn't have to do it "lishma".

Also, there are yeshivos that require anyone with a computer to have something like eblaster or covenant eyes/webchaver (IMO better..) with the reports sent to someone from the Yeshiva administration. You might suggest that to the Rosh Yeshiva.

I am in a Yeshiva where there was the same issue.  One of the people around the dorm building had an unsecured connection.  What the Rosh Yeshiva did was this.  He found the most technologically adept bochur in the yeshiva and had him knock on the door of this person and offer him to secure the internet connection for free along with any issues that come up.  problem solved.

If the Yeshiva permits computers, it should be requiring an effective filter, which is required al pi Halacha, as per the unanimous Psak of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah.  Otherwise, it is no better than a "Yeshiva" that allows the Bochurim to eat Treif.

And, the Yeshiva should also require monitoring software (such as eBlaster or Webchaver), which the Moetzes strongly recommended.

@Kedusha: Before starting to accuse I would assume that the bochurim are accessing  the internet with wifi-enabled phones and ipods. Not with computers. That makes putting on filters and accountability software virtually impossible. What I would recommend is prohibiting these devices as most Yeshivos these days do.

Kedusha, I don't mean to be harsh, but i think that's very cynical to say. No one is perfect and I think we will be the first to admit.

Exactly the problem, its the ipods and cell phones. I doubt anyone in the whole yeshiva has a laptop.

That's precisely the point - if these devices are unfiltered, they are ossur to use and the Yeshiva should not be allowing them.

Maccabee - no need to be sorry - just be more careful!  > > >

That's a good point - much like the idols that Yoshiyahu Hamelech tried to eradicate.  It sounds like the Rosh Yeshiva needs to be made aware of the situation and, at least, make the effort that Yoshiyahu did.
