I interpreted it the way he wrote it simply to mean that he realizes that he has reached the end of his rope with his wife - but realizes that he may not have reached the end of his rope with himself....that is an admission that all the sincerity making promises to the wife to quit, is not necessarily worth a thing. He is at least starting from an honest place.
As far as I am concerned, he is certainly no rosho! And to him I apply the praise of the Kotzker: "I would rather have a a rosho who knows he is a rosho, than a tzaddik who knows he is a tzaddik!" Admitting the frustrating limitations of our sincerity is half the battle! You go, 123pooped! (cute name...surprised the GYE filter doesn't change it to some other word!  )
