I am happy to report that my K9 now blocks all google products and services, including google search (which anyway redirected to K9 search), shopping, PLAY (I remember sitting with my mother trying to figure out how to block it), plus, and books. This can only happen when you block google.com.
Why? Because It's too easy on google services to access bad content. It's kinda like having youtube not blocked and relying on webchaver- echh. Webchaver isn't perfect.
I feel free already. This is why I migrated my email to outlook.com. I recommend this for everybody male.
A note about gmail users: I opened a outlook.com account (a very clean, intuitive new email service) with the same name as gmail (except it ends @outlook.com), then I set it to forward all emails from my old account to this one, and I even set it to allow me to send emails AS my old address. (BE SURE TO SET THIS UP BEFORE BLOCKING GOOGLE....)

I did this a while ago and i'm not sure if i remember the details correctly. But I was able to block everything on Google except Gmail. If I remember correctly i blocked everything and whitelisted accounts.google.com and mail.google.com. Sorry I don't have a machine here to test it on right now.

there are ways on K9 to block just google (and all) open image searches except K9 (I second use sparily, and wisely). Google as a search engine is basically equal to any other in risk, and most sites that shouldnt be accessed are blocked by K9 from google as well. Most are even blocked from searches (I dont know if I set up google preferences or K9 did it automatically). I also have never had an issue with gmail. I feel that this is satisfactory for me. after all, as every addict knows, where there's a YH, there's all too much of a way. to be safe requires satisfactory boundaries. I think google can live within these if set up properly.
