Grey areas 09 Aug 2012 16:41 #143278

Guys, found this excerpt from an article dealing with 'grey areas' very relevant:

What’s a “Gray Area”?
“To me there is no such thing as a ‘gray area’ website,” says Fred Stoeker, co-author of the best-selling Every Man’s Battle series. “The pictures are either sensual or they are not. If they are, they are black. If they aren’t, they are white.”

Stoeker’s litmus test is Ephesians 5:3, “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality.” An otherwise benign website with a sensual advertisement is not “gray” in Stoeker’s mind: it is a spot of black on a white page. “I don’t think very often in terms of gray areas,” Stoeker reports. “When we look at something sensual, whether looking up into the window of Victoria’s Secret store at the mall, or looking at a picture on the MSNBC homepage of Britney Spears performing in her tawdry outfits, even these aren’t gray areas. Sensuality is sensuality, and it will take you down and trip you up.”

The same wash of pleasure chemicals hit the brain while looking at sensual images as when we look at pornography, says Stoeker. “It doesn’t matter if she is nude. That same chemical reaction happens in the eyes and limbic centers of the brain.” To a sexually wired brain, “gray” is just another shade of black.

Beautifull, Mr. Fred Stoker.

That's our perspective too, it's equally forbidden by the Torah to gaze at the most properly dressed woman as to watch porn - ולא תתורו אחרי לבבכם ואחרי עיניכם.

For sure if you know it arouses you in particular you don't need a ruling ...

Re: Grey areas 10 Aug 2012 08:13 #143358

Love that nederman, you are so right. But the YH never gives up trying to rationalise sin and make it appear less sinful in our eyes. Sometimes, when you are slipping, reading a ruling puts things back in the right perspective. (Cos the spirit of folly is beginning to come on you).

See, the reason I'm against Ephesians is because whether the author was Paul or not, he permits slavery. I'm against that in these times, and I'm also against prohibiting "even a hint of sexual immorality" in our times, it's not the word of Christ and love in our times has sincere will and peace.
Wait. Isn't this a JEWISH website?

Hey Tehillim,

Yes it is a Jewish website, but I see no problem with learning from any non-Jews who have something sensible to say. In fact I am willing to learn from ANYBODY, even my enemies if they speak wisdom.

Also, for a serious addict, there are no half-measures. Things have to be absolute and BLACK or WHITE, hence zero tolerance for personal sexual immorality.

True. but the question is, why there is a need to go searching in Ephhesians [where it is mandated that husbands to love their wives as christ loved the church] When our talmud says
תלמוד בבלי מסכת שבת דף סד עמוד ב

כל המסתכל באצבע קטנה של אשה - כאילו מסתכל במקום התורפה.

That's kinda like saying "there's no gray area"
Don't you think?
