I was just reading today how during the times of the Maccabees, as long as Shimon Hatzaddik was alive and served as Kohen Gadol, the Jews did not blend into the Greek culture because he was their spiritual leader and they followed his guidance to remain steadfast to the religion and moral values. It troubles me that in our generation where the culture around us pushes individuality and the privacy to do as we please, as is evident by the devices such as the iPhone, iPad, etc., where everyone has to be a part of the 'iPie', and where there are increasing divisive lines between different 'types' and groups of Jews, that we lack a central spiritual leader and that this divisiveness is a major cause of our demise and struggle with the Greek-infested, Roman-infested, Egypt-infested, Persia-infested culture that surrounds us. Why are we not banding together as a nation to realize that the Jewish whole is made up of distinct, yet equally integral parts? Why do we lack someone who we all agree on, claiming our 'group' (Orthodox, litvish, chassidish, etc.) is the end all or be all of the Jewish religion? I think, and correct me if I'm wrong, that if we accepted each other, in all areas of our lives, as is evident on these pages, these struggles would not be as daunting as they may seem because we would have a support group of Yidden spread throughout the world trying to bring morals and decency to an animalistic world. Please help me clarify my thoughts by commenting on these ideas.
