That closing note about mitzvos being a means to an end is interesting. I've always thought of mitzvos as both a means to a greater end and an end in themselves. To draw a l'havdil-comparison, I've often thought the same of being clean. I'm starting to think, though, that staying clean is mostly a means to an end also.

Hmmm....I think I confused myself. But I enjoyed the article!
