The combination of my PC and my handheld means GYE seems to think I'm here constantly. I'm not. Others log in "forever," but of course nothing is forever. So the number of false positives is huge. (FP= they show as here but they're not really.)

We also have folks who come in for a second and log out again. They might not even show as online, but they have been. So the number of false negatives could be huge. (FN=they show as NOT here but they HAVE been.)

I agree with your general premise that there's LOTS more to gain by joining the party (post; get posted on) than sitting as a wallflower (OMG; that poster said WHAT??). But I don't think the point is that the lurkers are all a buncha woosies (which they are ). It's that there's so much more they could have if only they took that first couple of risky scary steps of registering and then posting.

But come on, folks, how tricky could that really be? Pretend you're not really registering as a sex offender who can't work with children anymore (because that's NOT it ) but just that you're registering with aish or arutzsheva for access to a higher level of Torah (because that's what this IS - it's avodah of the highest order).

Many of them are search engine bots sent out from Google, Yahoo, and MSN, and their sole purpose is to scrape data from websites so they can properly rank them within their search engines. They appear as "Guest" users, but they're just scripts...
