In addition to receiving my Master's of Arts in Counselling Psychology, I have undergone extensive training with Dr. Patrick Carnes and Dr. Kenneth Adams, both of whom are leaders in the field of sexual addiction.
I have been working with the Orthodox community for many years.
Compulsive sexual behaviour can be as destructive and devastating a problem as any other addiction. Yet the shame and fear of being stigmatized by society often prevents those with a sexual addiction from seeking the help they deserve. The sex addict, like all other addicts, usually tries without success to stop his or her harmful behavior, but can’t. The resultant shame and despair ultimately leads to an escalation of the negative behaviour.
My therapeutic style is direct but at the same time, supportive and encouraging. In individual and group therapy, we will work together on self-empowerment, increased self-esteem, and authentic self-efficacy. Using Dr. Carnes’ task-based approach to treatment, sessions will combine the tasks and time for processing.
There is a focus on learning to recognize & manage the consequences of sexual compulsion, completing the basic tasks necessary for successful recovery and healing, developing specific skills in order to avoid triggers and reduce shame, and implementing a healthy sexual recovery plan. There is also a big emphasis placed on understanding and dealing with the roots of the addiction. While it is impossible to point to a specific issue/s and label it as the cause/s of the addiction, issues such as lack of attachment to a primary caregiver, and physical, sexual or emotional abuse are almost always present in sex addicts and clients must be able to begin the healing process from these problems in order to maintain sobriety.
