In treating patients with any addictive disorder, I find it helpful to look beyond the substance or behavior they are engaged in and to focus on the core issues that are underlying it.  After abstinence is achieved, the deeper work of understanding why the behavior began and what feelings it is masking begins, along with relapse prevention and continued care.
