MEET RAV DONIEL KATZ

Rabbi, Visionary, Master Educator, Fellow Seeker

For more than a decade, Rav Doniel’s open and compassionate teachings have been a catalyst for change in the lives of thousands of people worldwide. Born and raised in Australia, Rav Doniel abandoned his award-winning film and theatre career in his mid-twenties after a year of intensive spiritual awakening.

Rav Doniel has lectured extensively around the world for the last 10 years, during which time he was also a faculty member at Neve Yerushalayim and Aish HaTorah in Jerusalem. In addition, he spoke at a 2015 symposium on science and the meditational tools of Abrahamic traditions at the Mind & Life Institute in Massachusetts; was invited by the Chief Rabbi of South Africa to speak at the Sinai Indaba conference in Johannesburg and Cape Town, during which over 5000 people attended his Elevation Project sessions; and presented at the 2016 Wisdom 2.0 conference in Tel Aviv.

The Elevation Project brings together Jews and seekers from all walks of life with a single goal: to explore the Torah’s definitive map of human psychology and consciousness on an experiential level. We’ve synthesized and systemized the most transformative teachings of Kabbalah, Chassidus, Mussar and Talmud into an easy-to-follow, step-by-step learning experience that combines to create a profound path of accelerated spiritual development.

12 Step Attitude

Powerless is Anti-Torah!

By GYE

Someone wrote:

The 12-Steps speak about how we are powerless. This seems to me to be ANT-TORAH!! It may SEEM like we're powerless, and it may be EXTREMELY difficult (like it is for me) but powerless?? The very first mussar shmooze in the Torah was given by the MASTER HIMSELF to Kayin. Hashem said to him in a few short words - Kayin, you can do it if you WANT TO - I'm not saying it's easy, BUT YOU CAN DO IT. You CAN overcome this.

GYE Responds:

You are asking a good question, but it's based on a common misconception about the concept of Powerless.

Powerless doesn't mean you can't do anything about it. Powerless simply means that you can't change the fact you are an addict, in the same way that someone with diabetes can't change that fact either.

Does this mean a person with diabetes is doomed to die? No! But instead of fighting diabetes, he needs to learn what WORKS for a diabetic!

So again to sum up: Powerless is referring to the disease and not to the person's ability to help themselves.

Hope this helps...

Working Only With the Present Moment

By Never Again

On Friday, I woke up on the wrong foot (after a nocturnal emission) and I was sure my day was only going to follow with disaster. To my surprise though, it didn't. Instead, this Shabbos turned out to be the most positive, meaningful, and fulfilling Shabbos I've had, maybe the entire year! I took a leap and decided I'd put everything aside and work only with the present moment, to use it to its fullest, and to make it the best possible. The thought I carried throughout the day was, "What's the best I can do this very moment?". Wow! I found that it's so much easier to work this way! When focused only on the present moment, you stop making yourself feel like a hypocrite for anything of the past, and the future doesn't either make a difference at this point in time. That totally frees you of the stresses coming from thoughts of consistency, goals, perfection, and personal achievement, etc.! Then, when that's disregarded and all that matters is the present moment, you're even able to enjoy things that would otherwise be extremely stressful! Today was the first day in a long time that I can look back and be proud of how I spent each moment!

Very important (life) lesson learned...

Prayer in the Trenches

By Dov

Through the day I often just say "Help me" to Him, and speak to Him a few times over the course of a normal day, at least in short phrases like "Help" and the random, "Thank-You".

Anything longer is not practical for me 'in the trenches', so I keep is as simple as possible.

Before "Modeh Ani", I ask Him to "please help me be Yours today."

The longer versions of prayers are nicer for me when I have time, like during or after a meal, or a mincha or ma'ariv, etc.

I like seeing meaning in a posuk and schlepping it with me through at least a part of the day.

What Chaza"l wrote for us in the nusach of tefilah expresses our deepest needs and desires, though we might not be aware of it.

And our own begging and speaking to Hashem reflects what we are aware we need, here in the darkness of the golus inside our bodies.

We are yidden. We have always done both.

(See the Me'iri on the sugya of t'fillas haderech in b'rachos. He explains that the tefillos haderech and suchh that chaza"l composed were just springboards for every yid to make up his own words and express his present needs to Hashem in an open and honest way.)
