Elaine Leadem

Training in Addiction and/or Lust Addiction

Elaine's specialized training by Patrick Carnes, PhD has rewarded her with dual national certifications for Sex and Multiple Addiction Therapist by the International Institute for Trauma & Addiction Professionals. Elaine’s tenure in the addiction treatment field has spanned the past 24 years in a cross section of modalities ranging from residential co-addiction treatment to intensive psycho-dramatic therapy for recovering couples. In addition to coordinating the provision of clinical services in an expanding private practice, she has co-authored three books including "One in the Spirit: Meditation course for recovering couples" that is designed to support addicts and their families in their journey of recovery. She is a seasoned retreat master whose commitment to shared healing has helped recovering couples to work through and heal from their betrayal.

Clinical Experience with Orthodox Community

Together with her husband John, the Leadems are well known LCSWs and Sex Addiction Therapists among recovering addicts and couples in the Orthodox Jewish community. Since treating their first Orthodox Jewish client for recovery from sex addiction in September of 2007, hundreds of Orthodox Jews and their spouses have been treated with great positive results in maintaining sexual abstinence and rebuilding their standing with their family, the community and most importantly – with themselves.

Elaine’s professional work in the addictions treatment field began in the late 80’s and has evolved into a subspecialty which targets the needs of the victims of traumatic abuse and betrayal. Her model for addressing addiction counseling needs is compatible with tenants of all 12 Step programs. She believes that addiction counseling services should be provided by trained professionals who have a personal affinity for the victims of the various addictive behaviors. Elaine provides individual and marriage counseling in both outpatient and online counseling modalities designed to address a wide variety of relationship problems such as treatment for addictive behaviors, eating disorders, and specialized treatment for trauma and PTSD.

A dedicated commitment to the marital health of her clients has provided the core inspiration for the development of a “Shared Program of Recovery”© which has helped many couples move from the traditional parallel model of recovery to strong united core support group. Elaine has co-founded this couple’s modality of therapy and has incorporated these concepts into “One in the Spirit” which is a daily recovery meditation book for couples.

Elaine’s personal life journey was threatened by addictions at an impressionable age, yet she has learned to use that experience, supported by extensive professional training, to provide a beacon for people whose life’s challenges seem insurmountable. She has recently celebrated her 30th year in recovery and believes that “true sobriety will escape both the seasoned and the newcomer if 12 Step Work is ignored.”
