Calm Amidst the Storm
By Rabbi David Ashear
At the beginning of World War II, the Brisker Rav was in Warsaw and bombs were falling all around. The people who were with him at that time were having an argument over whether it was safer to stay in the basement, protected from a direct hit, or if the basement was actually more dangerous, as one could get buried there under the rubble. As the debate raged, the Brisker Rav was on the top floor of the building, walking around, thinking in learning, perfectly calm and relaxed. The people wondered how the Rabbi could be so calm during such a tense time. The Rabbi explained to them, “The only thing in the world that I am worried about is doing the ratzon Hashem. I was going back and forth in my mind deciding whether it would be better to be here or in the basement and I determined that the two places were equally dangerous, so it makes no difference where I stay. Now I am completely calm because Hashem looks after me. I just have to make sure I’m doing His will."

Nothing to fear but fear itself
By DavidT
The Maharal (Chidushei Agados Bava Metzia 33.) teaches that when a person is afraid of poverty, he will become poor. The Maharal explains,"By being afraid of poverty, a person is subjugating himself to poverty, and this causes the poverty to rule over him."
| The Maharal proves this with a comparison. A man is trying to walk on a beam. If the beam is on the ground, he will be able to walk on it. He won't fall off. But if it is over a river, he will probably fall. This is because he is afraid, and that causes him to fall. The same applies to the Coronavirus. The fear itself can be more dangerous than the virus! Let us trust in Hashem and believe that He is in total control and only has our best interest in mind at all times.
Member "Bigtzadik57" responded: Very nice, thanks. I'm thinking that the lesson of the Maharal may also help in getting myself clean from lust, because as long as I feel weak I will fall, but if I am not afraid and feel that I won't fall, then I won't! |
